We live in a culture of selfishness. The young are trained from birth to think of themselves as the center of the universe. Maybe it’s because we, as parents, spend so much time asking them what they want instead of having them consider what others want. The unfortunate, but not unexpected, result is a materialistic, prideful mentality.
Jesus’ teachings are diametrically opposed to this mentality. Putting self first is a grievous sin. It should be clearly understood that selfishness is the cause most often of all other sin. One must acknowledge that following Jesus has always demanded the denying of one’s self. For this week let’s consider whether we are guilty of this heinous sin by considering the following passage as our foundation for this lesson.
Matthew 22:36-40 – “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
