“Seeing His Days Are Determined…”

How long will man live, this question has been asked for ages. The National Vital Statistic Report (Volume 53, Number 6) states that in 2002 the average life expectancy for both males and females was 77.3 years of age. With the constant improvements in science life expectancy continues to increase each year. This often leads to a false sense of security. Man, many times, believes he can increase his days forever. It seems as if man is trying to reach immortality through the increase of physical life.

Many religious folks have misunderstood mans length of life as well. Some point to Genesis 6:3 – “And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.” However, God was not giving the length of mans life but rather was expressing that He was going to destroy man in 120 years in the days of Noah. Another favorite passage to misrepresent is Psalms 90:10 – “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” David was simply expressing that whether we live to be 70 or 80 physical life will end. As the text for our lesson suggests it is futile for man to try to live forever.

With this in mind let us consider further the words of Job.

How Saving Faith Is Produced

(36 downloads)

The question of Biblical faith is a never-ending sea of confusion for many folks today. I once heard it said, “I personally knew there was God out there before I critically studied the Word,” and another who said, “I also believe that most Christians receive their faith without the New Testament.”

The problem with these statements is the belief that saving faith is a miraculous act. However, the faith of first century Christians was not a miraculous belief in God. It was the hearing of God’s word, the gospel, which produced true saving faith. The New Testament shows in great detail just how faith was and is produced. Let us study together this week and see just how true saving faith is produced.

The Salvation of the Great Commission

(40 downloads)

Download this episode (15 min)
Today, there are various and contradicting teachings on salvation. One church teaches that a person need only believe in Jesus and you will be saved. Another states you must accept Jesus into your heart. Yet another teaches that you pray the “sinner’s prayer” and thus accept Jesus into your heart. Further still some will teach you need to repent of your sins before you can be saved. All agree that you “need Jesus” to be saved, but they don’t all teach the same things on what a person does to be saved. With so many different teachings about how a person is saved how can we know for sure?

The wonderful thing about our God is that He has provided man with a clear answer! We can know this answer by studying the pattern of what people did to be saved according to
the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. In other words, we can read and study and know for a fact what we can do to please God today.

With this in mind let us study this week the salvation of the Great Commission.

The Truth That Makes One Free

(35 downloads)

One of the better-known statements of Jesus is this: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (Jn 8:32) Today this popular statement is often used in a political context. Referring to freedom from political oppression or extolling the value of the free press, and freedom of expression. While such are notable virtues, Jesus had something entirely different in mind. Freedom from something more serious than political oppression. Truth that comes from only one source.

Let’s examine, this week, the context of Jesus’ statement found (Jn 8:31-36) and from a careful reading of it let’s see what freedom Jesus had in mind.
